Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 3, 2026
BigFred is built with privacy as a core principle. Your camera data stays between your devices and your UniFi Protect console. We do not operate servers, collect analytics, or track usage.
Data We Collect
None. BigFred does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on external servers. There is no account system, no analytics, no telemetry, and no crash reporting.
Data Stored on Your Mac
BigFred stores the following data locally on your Mac to function:
- API credentials — Your Protect API key and/or UI.com API key are stored in the macOS Keychain, encrypted by the operating system.
- Console connection info — Your Protect console's IP address, port, and connection mode are stored in a local SwiftData database.
- App settings — Preferences like snapshot refresh interval, notification rules, stream quality, and camera view configurations.
- Camera snapshots — Temporarily cached in memory while the app is running. Not written to disk.
Network Communication
BigFred communicates directly with:
- Your UniFi Protect console — Over your local network (HTTPS) to fetch camera snapshots, RTSP streams, and event data.
- Ubiquiti's cloud (api.ui.com) — Only when using Remote Access mode. Requests are proxied through Ubiquiti's cloud connector to reach your Protect console. BigFred uses your UI.com API key for authentication.
BigFred does not communicate with any other servers. No data is sent to NPC, third-party analytics services, or advertising networks.
Camera Data
Camera snapshots and live video streams are fetched directly from your Protect console and displayed on your Mac. They are never uploaded, shared, or stored persistently. When you close the app, all cached snapshots are discarded.
Notifications
BigFred uses macOS native notifications (via UserNotifications framework) to alert you about camera events. Notification content (camera name, event type, snapshot thumbnail) is processed entirely on your Mac. No notification data is sent to external push notification services.
Third-Party Services
BigFred does not integrate with any third-party services, SDKs, or frameworks that collect user data. The only external communication is with your own UniFi Protect infrastructure.
Children's Privacy
BigFred does not collect any data from any users, including children. There is no account system or data collection of any kind.
Data Deletion
Since all data is stored locally on your Mac, you can delete it at any time by:
- Removing BigFred from your Applications folder
- Deleting the app's container:
~/Library/Containers/com.npc.bigfred/ - Removing Keychain entries prefixed with
com.npc.bigfred
Changes to This Policy
If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Since BigFred does not collect any data, significant changes are unlikely.
